Female urology is branch of medicine that deals with the treatment of female genito-urinary tract disorders. Any abnormality in the nerves, muscles and connective tissues associated with the vagina, uterus, bladder and rectum is covered under female urology.
Urologic diseases may include:
- Overactive bladder: inability to store the urine in the urinary bladder
- Urinary incontinence: involuntary excretion of urine
- Faecal incontinence: involuntary excretion of faecal matter
- Vaginal prolapse: bulging at the opening of vagina
- Frequent urination
- Nocturia: waking up to urinate 2-3 times in the night
- Recurrent urinary tract infection
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Bladder or pelvic floor pain
Some of the common treatments utilised in female urology include medication, behavioural changes, pelvic floor exercises, devices such as a pessary that can be inserted and surgery. Depending on your individual condition, your urologist will suggest the best treatment plan.
