What is Urological Cancer?

The human body is made up of microscopic cells. New cells are continuously being formed throughout one’s life to replace the damaged and worn-out cells. This division of cells is controlled by genes (genetic code) present inside each cell. Cancer is the abnormal and uncontrolled division of cells. This proliferation of cells forms a lump called a tumour and is usually caused when there is a problem with the genetic control system. Cancer can be formed in living cells present in any region of the body. The organ in which the cancer forms is called primary cancer. When these tumours are limited to the region of origin they are called benign and are not cancerous. When cancer cells break off from the primary tumour and spread to another part of the body to form new tumours, they are called secondary cancers, and the process is termed metastasis.

Urological cancers include:

  • Bladder cancer: The bladder is a hollow muscular elastic organ that stores urine excreted by the kidneys, before it is emptied from the body by means of urination. Cancer that starts in the urinary bladder is known as bladder cancer.

  • Kidney cancer: Kidney cancer or renal cancer is a malignant disease of the kidney cells. Renal cell carcinoma affects the tubules of the kidneys and is the most common form of kidney cancer in adults. Sometimes young children develop a form of kidney cancer called Wilms’ tumour.

  • Prostate cancer: Prostate cancer is one of the common causes for mortality from cancer in men. Therefore screening for prostate cancer at earlier stages is always beneficial so that effective treatment can be provided.

  • Testicular cancer: The testicles are male sex organs that produce sperm and testosterone hormone (responsible for male sexual development). Testicular cancer is a very rare form of cancer, generally affecting men between the ages of 15 to 44 years.

  • Penile cancer: The penis is the male reproductive organ that forms a passage for sperm and urine to exit the body. Penile cancer is cancer of the penis that occurs when cells on the skin or within the penis grow and multiply abnormally.
